Fitness and Me

If I were to choose a relationship status with fitness it would be "it's complicated" and to be honest, I'm the one complicating things.

As a child I would constantly be outside running, biking, climbing (mainly on things I wasn't allowed to), swimming, and more. But it wasn't called fitness then, it was just called playing.

Then I grew up (not sure when that happened or even if it has) and I eventually forgot how to play. Fitness took over and it became all about the number on the scale, the muscle I gained (which isn't very much), whether or not I can climb a rope (which I can't) or if I can jump 20 feet into the air from a stationary position (which I also can't).

I felt like I was "failing" at being active because I couldn't do what the fitness professionals were doing. I became so disheartened that I stopped for a couple of years all together. I just thought "what's the point". Turns out, there is a point... to stay happy and healthy. So I got back into it and this time I was more gentle with myself and a heck of a lot more realistic.

I knew I had to start back at the basics and decided how to fit fitness into my life rather than make fitness my life. I don't have all the time in the world to dedicate to being superhuman fit. I'm a regular person and I have a regular amount of abilities. Don't get me wrong, I think those who have the time and dedicate it to pushing their bodies to the max are very impressive humans. That's just not me though and I'm okay with that. Just because I can't scale a wall with my bare hands doesn't mean that I'm not fit, it just means I'm not spider-man.

Stop having a complicated relationship with fitness. The sooner we recognize that fitness, exercising, working out, pumping iron (whatever you call it) is really just "playing" for adults then the more enjoyable it will become. Playing has always been an important factor in child development and I'm willing to wager that it's just as important for adults.

You won't find me doing anything spectacular. What you will get, is an honest and real look into my fitness journey, as well as some tips, tricks and resources to create a more healthy lifestyle for yourself. My hope is to shatter the "perfect" lens of fitness that has been created and just show a regular person being a regular amount of fit.

My son and I scaling a dirt wall with our bare hands...maybe I am spider-man?
